Santa Barbara, CA (map)

University of California-Santa Barbara, commonly known as UC Santa Barbara, is a top-rated public research university in Santa Barbara, California. Founded in 1909, it has been ranked as the ninth-best public university in the nation. The University is renowned for its top programs in sociology, physics, engineering, and history; the school is further prestigious for its faculty, which includes five Nobel Price winners. Widely recognized for its research activity, UCSB was elected to the acclaimed Association of American Universities (AAU) in 1995.

The Santa Barbara campus boasts a robotics laboratory, a neuroscience research facility, and seawater laboratories. The school offers an exceptional variety of on-campus activities including a Greek community in which roughly 10% of students participate. In addition, many sports fans find a welcoming home at UCSB: not only do varsity teams compete in the Division I Big West conference, but less competitive athletes will find a wide range of teams, from surfing to alpine racing.
