Southern Methodist University Admissions Information

Southern Methodist University
Dallas, TX (map)

Southern Methodist University is located in Dallas, Texas–a city which boasts nearly 250 annual days of sunshine. This bright climate lends itself to a happy campus and student body whose academic abilities are complemented by a genuine desire to experience as much as possible, both on campus and in the city. Despite the school’s name, classes at SMU are actually secular, and students represent a wide range of religious affiliations. Students at SMU are encouraged to excel, and are rewarded for doing so through programs such as the University Honors Program, in which selected students enroll in small seminars and have access to exclusive research grants and job opportunities. In addition, SMU offers a wide range of opportunities to study abroad, with 24 programs in 12 countries.

Outside of the classroom, students at Southern Methodist University face a plethora of ways to spend their time. The SMU Mustangs draw a crowd of loyal fans and spectators at many games and Peruna, the school’s mascot, is among the most recognizable figures around campus. All first-year students must live on campus, though each may choose whether to live in an exclusively first-year residence hall, or one in which all four years live together. Greek life has a strong and lively presence throughout campus, and students may participate in any of ten fraternities or eight sororities.

Admissions Information

Southern Methodist University accepts just over half of all applicants, which establishes the school as selective but not overwhelmingly competitive. Admissions occur on a rolling basis, which means that the earlier a prospective student submits his or her application, the more of a an advantage he or she has in the admissions process, since earlier applications are reviewed against fewer other candidates.

SMU admissions officials approach an application holistically, considering a variety of factors when making a decision about a student. The applicant's class rank, application essay, recommendations, standardized test scores, and GPA all hold significant weight in the admissions process. In addition, considerations such as an applicant's character, extracurricular involvement, talent, alumni relation, and demonstrated interest in SMU all hold some weight in the decision process.
